Overview
Once the project has its basic outline documents (Project Brief, Project Approach, and Risk Log) and the Project Management Team has been decided (Project Management Team structure and Job Description(s)) the Stage Plan outlining the initiation of the project (including the Project Initiation Document (PID) creation) needs approval. This could be an official meeting in a large project, or a brief telephone conversation or email in a smaller project.
The main results are an approved Project Brief and Initiation Stage Plan as well as if necessary project Start-up Notification to interested parties (e.g. Programme Management, the Project Support etc).
Responsibility lies with the Project Board.

Tips
- Ensure there is adequate funding and commitment for the project
- Project Assurance responsibilities must have been allocated and accepted
- When evaluating the risks are their evaluations acceptable?
- Be sure that the resources requested include incidentals such as admin support, accommodation and communication costs
- Avoid over reporting but try to involve the Project Board as much as possible, after all this is the groundwork for the whole project.
